Well if a domain name is your home's street address, your web hosting service could be considered your actual home. This is the location where all of your site's files are stored for public viewing. You must have some form of hosting service in order for your site to be accessible via the Internet.

Prices can range anywhere from free to upwards of $150/month or more, depending on the features you require.
Pitfalls:
Free hosting sites - Sounds good, till you upload your site and view it for the first time... and there it is, the trade-off for not paying for your hosting... tons of irrelevant advertising plastered all around your web page. Not the image most businesses want to convey to their customers.
Design costs and Hosting costs are NOT the same thing - When you have a design firm build your website, the price you are quoted is typically just for the design of the site. More often than not, you must purchase your hosting services from a separate company. A design firm should be able to provide you with at least a few names of hosting companies to get you started. Be sure to ask about hosting when requesting quotes from design firms.
